25th Anniversary of Theta Sound!
|
Welcome to our second on-line edition of Theta Sounds (and a big Thank You to those who responded to our premiere issue with compliments and kudos). This is a very special issue as it not only highlights our 25th anniversary, but also links to our annual print version of Theta Sounds (issue 31), a whopping 10 pages of articles, photos, a full year's worth of Studio Notes and an invitation to our 25th Anniversary Theta Sound Studio Barbeque and Fest! (see below). The web version of that issue features all of the above in COLOR so you can view/print it in color if you like. For the 3,678,421 recipients on our mailing list, you will be receiving the traditional printed version in your mailbox soon.

| In August of 1977, when Theta Sound Studio officially opened for business in a one-bedroom apartment in Downey, California, it was more of a last resort than a pre-determined business plan. You see, Randy Tobin, with several years experience recording, engineering, writing and producing in his "barracks studio" during his days in the Air Force (plus two years after he got out), sent out 25 job applications to prominent recording studios in and around his native Los Angeles. From those 25, only one actually called with an "offer" to clean ash trays, etc. Randy decided he would do better setting up shop in his living room rather than going the ash tray route.

Looking back, it's not too hard to figure out why Theta Sound has survived and prospered all these years. Its purpose was, and still is, to have a comfortable environment in which people can do their best. Since it was built for Randy's songwriting and collaboration projects, it had to be a creative space that worked for him. It just so happens, it worked for others as well!

Of course, is takes people to make a studio -- musicians, songwriters, composers, producers, engineers, staff, mascots, etc. -- and over the years, we've had the pleasure to be part of the creative process with all of them! Thanks to all the people who have helped us achieve a significant milestone in our history. And thanks to all of you who are part of our present endeavors and future dreams!

Singer/Songwriter/Pianist Morgan Grace has written some new songs and she came to Theta Sound to work with producer Randall Michael Tobin on one of them, Hard to Be Me. Randy provided the foundation, David Anderson played djembe (hand drum) and shaker and Morgan laid down the piano and several vocal parts. Randy added a few finishing touches and the result... awesome!

Soprano Michele Patzakis came in with accompanist William Vendice to record arias by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Gounod.

Jazz singer Suzanne Kelley, who originally came to Theta Sound as part of Cathy Segal-Garcia's Jazz Vocal Recording Workshop, was in tracking her new demo with Karen Hammack on piano, Bill Markus on bass and Paul Kreibich on drums.

Maje had Randy create backing tracks in her own key of the song, Jolie Louise, by French-Canadian born New Orleans recording artist, Daniel Lanois. Maje will be tracking her own vocals to the song here soon. In the meantime, check out Maje's web site here (designed by Randy Tobin).

Singer/Songwriter Andrea Ross-Greene recorded Too Far Away, a powerful song about Rod Wotton, a father who perished in the towers on 9/11. The single is available here and 100% of the proceeds of the sale of the record go to the Wotton Children's Fund.
